Planning - drafts of my work

Before I started to take pictures and start making my music magazine, i drew out a plan of what I wanted them to look like so it was easier to take my pictures afterwards. I then scanned them in.

Planning - different camera shots

To plan different camera shots we took pictures to see what different kinds of pictures worked best.

The picture was taken showing depth of field and multiple focus, this gives the audeince a chance to see the background in the image and also gives an impression to how the band behaves.  The band members all looking different directions makes the focus on lots of different things instead of just one specific thing.

This next picture is a low angle aswel as using mutiple focus again. This low angel on the image makes the band have a different prespective which also leads to them being in mutiple focus and their eye contact being on many different things and not just on the camera.

Planning - different fonts

  1. Music magazine (Arial)
  2. Music magazine (Courier)
  3. Music magazine (Georgia)
  4. Music magazine (Helvetica)
  5. Music magazine (Times)
  6. Music magazine (Trebuchet)
  7. Music magazine (Verdana)
These are the 7 different fonts I the choice to decide which one I am going to use for my music magazine. The one I am going to use is Verdana I think as it is an easy font to read but doesn't make the magazine too formal as I want to attract younger peoples attention.

Research - double page spread

Lastly I have to analyse two different double page spreads.

This is a double page spread which includes an interview with Dizzee Rascal and to catch the readers attention when going past this page the title of his name is in a pink colour which stands out from the black and greys used throughout the spread. The title takes over 1/3 of the left side of the page which makes it easy for the reader to read, and as it shows what may be in the questions and answers it makes the reader want to carry on reading. On the right hand side their is a picture of him which takes up the whole page and just next to him is a quote taken from the interview which makes the reader read it and want to read the whole interview then to find out what else he has said. The questions are in bold and the answers are in normal font which makes it a lot easier for the reader to follow.

This is a double page spread of an interview with Solange Knowles from Vibe magazine. The whole page is in black and white apart from 3 things which are her- to catch the audiences attention when going through the magazine and then the subtitle at the top of the page which is a blue colour which then links to her name which is the same blue colour. The font colour is the same as her greyscale images in the background which then makes her centre image of her in colour alot brighter and a lot more noticable. There is more pictures on this double spread then there is writing and this allows the reader not to feel overflowed by writing so they are then more likely to read it. There is a quote from the interview in a bold font next to her and in the title it mentions her famous sister, Beyonce, so both her fans and Beyonces fans would be attracted into reading this.

Research - contents page

Now I have to analyse two different contents pages before I make my own.

This is from the magazine 'Q' and we can tell this as it has the logo in the corner of the page which is an easy way to represent the magazine as when somebody will see that Q they will know exactly what magazine it is from. The information is set out need and orderly which makes it easy for the reader to see exactly what page each certain thing is on. There is a number of pictures down the side of the contents which shows what artists are going to be in the magazine so if you recognise one of the artists it has the page number next to their picture which allows them to go straight to that page. The picture are not as orderly as the text as they are scattered around the side and this shows that the magazine is an informal magazine which may make it more appealing for the audience. The colour scheme used is red white and black which keeps it simple again.

The next contents page I am anaylising is a contents page from the magazine 'Vibe.' This is a simple layout with a global star Kanye West to the left of it making him the main image. All the features of the magazine is in a small list to the side of the page which is then split into two different sections: fashion and featues. This allows the reader to easily nagavate through the magazine. Even though thr image is in black and white it is central to the page and the biggest thing on the page so it stands out and is the first thing you see. By having the only thing in colour the heart on Kanye Wests chest it is exactly in the centre of the page so your eye is drawn to it and this makes you then look at one side and see Kayne and the other side tells you all the features so would make you want to carry on reading the magazine.

Research - Front covers

Before I start making my music magazine I have to research different magazines to find out what certain features are carried out in each magazine and also to look at different layouts.

Vibe Magazine

Vibe is a magazine which covers hip hop/urban culture with a focus on music and includes articles, interviews and the chance to win different competitions.
The target audience for this magazine is male teenagers/young adults and you can tell this as stereotypically males are more likely to buy a 'rap' magazine rather then girls who are stereotypically seen to buy a 'pop' magazine. Because of this, Vibe have used a popular male on the front of the magazine who is a role model for many young males. They image they have used is a media shot and placed in the centre of the magazine so that it grabs the attention of the target audience if they were looking at magazines to buy. The imagine relates to the music genre of the magazine as Eminem is specifically well known for his hip hop music, they have done this so that when the target audience see him on the front and they like his music they would know that this magazine will have other artists they will like and they will be more likely to buy it. As the image in framed in the centre this gives room for the magazine to put all the strap lines around the image so once that image as caught their attention they will then look around and see what else is in the magazine. The artist on the front of the magazine is wearing a plain black vent showing his tattoos and also his chain he is wearing around his neck. This is a stereotypical look for somebody who is young and into hip hop so it applies to them and makes them see Eminem as a role model and would make them more interested in buying the magazine.
The magazine is called VIBE which suggests to the audience that when you read the magazine you will get a good feeling, 'good vibes.' This is a short catchy title that will easily be remembered and based on the target audience of the magazine, they would talk about it and this would lead in more people buying it. The content of the magazine  is advertised by the strap lines as for example next to Eminem, in big red letters it says his name which would grab the attention of the audience and then underneath that strap line there is another strap line which says '50 hottest rap blogs ranked' and if the target audience who was looking at this magazine they would obviously be interested in the 50 hottest rap blogs so they are more likely to buy it so they could find out. On the other side of Eminem is a list of popular artists names such as : Swaggerjack, Lil Wayne, Kayne West, Jay-z & T.I this also attracts the audience as it is names of artists that somebody who would buy the magazine would be interested in. Alliteration is used on this magazine front cover such as "Vibe. Vicodin. Valium" "Real rap" "Comes clean" these are used as when you first look at the magazine these are short and rememberable also gives it a lyrical edge.

Q Magazine.

The next magazine I am anaylising is Q magazine. Q magazine covers mainly pop/rock but they do special editions where they look at many different artists also. The target audience for this magazine is young adults but also for the older generation as it includes band features in the magazine which include older bands. On the front cover there is an image in the center of Coldplay and on front of this picture in big yellow letters is the word 'Coldplay' this is so that the magazine is eye catching and you know exactly who is on the front cover. There is two other smaller picture with the names of their bands in big letters and a bold font, this is so that even if you don't see the picture you can see the writing and know exactly what band it is. They have used 4 different colours on this front cover which include red, white black and yellow. All of these colours are very bold and very eye catching so it makes the magazine stand out from the other magazines that may be in the shop.
The magazine is called 'Q' which is an easy simple logo which can be remembered and when you see the logo you know exactly what magazine it goes with. The content of the magazine is advertised in the strap lines down each side and this allows the reader to know exactly what is in the magazine and will make them more likely to buy it. The names of big bands are in larger bold letters such as 'U2' and 'Blocparty' so if this catches the readers attention and they know that they are interested in these bands they know that this magazine would be a good magazine for them to buy. There is no alliteration used on this front cover but there is lists of 3 'Albums, gigs, films' 'Fear tantrums and nudity' 'Young, hot and glum' this shows what is included in an easily read way without putting a lot of text on the magazine front cover and making it look cluttered.
